The Prestige of eSports - Dota 2 Tournament

Online games like Dota 2 are quickly becoming a legit sport, mostly branded by the term eSports or electronic sports. What was once an ordinary computer game has evolved into a highly-competitive and well-recognized platform around the globe, attracting millions of spectators and players and hundreds of major brands as sponsors. In fact, there are colleges and universities already building their own eSports teams and granting scholarships to eSports players. Moreover, you can find a plethora of materials like documentary and player guides online, showcasing the impact of online games in today's generation.

What is Dota 2?

Dota 2 is a multiplayer strategy game that pits two groups each consisting of 5 players. The goal is to reach the other team's base by killing heroes, winning team fights, and destroying towers located in each of the three lanes in the game's map layout.

Dota 2 Tournaments

Every year, there is a world tournament that pits together the best players from around the world. Last year, Dota 2 World Championship 2014 was held in Seattle, Washington and was the fourth edition of The International franchise.

A grand total of 16 5-man groups were invited to participate and given the chance to win the whopping prize pool of more than $10 million. The tournament format is as follows:

Qualifiers

There are 4 regional qualification rounds. The winner of each regional qualification round can participate in the main tournament held in Seattle. The runner-up will be given one last shot to compete for the final position in the main tournament.

Playoffs

There are three phases. Phase One involves the 4 second-place groups from the regional qualification rounds playing in Seattle. The 2 winning teams will advance to phase 2 of the playoffs. Once in Phase Two, a 16-team round robin team stage will take place, with the 2 top teams advancing directly to the main event. The bottom 6 groups will be eliminated while the middle 8 groups in the bracket will advance to the third phase.

Main Event

8 groups that emerge victorious from the playoffs will now enter into a double elimination bracket for the chance to win the prizes of both the $10 million pot money and the bragging rights.

Prizes in Dota 2 tournaments as well as in other eSports competitions are funded partially through sponsorship of large brands as well as from proceeds of goods sold. For instance, during the World Championship 2014, the initial pot money was $1,600,000. However, an additional $2.50 was added for every TI4 Compendium sold to in-game players. The Compendium is an in-game item that contains rare equipment like headgear, emoticons, special effects, and couriers, which are highly valued by the gaming community and can be traded.
