Many people don't know it, but for years people have been making thousands to millions of dollars in prizes by playing video games competitively. It started in the late 1990s to early 2000s when people were playing first person shooting games like Quake and Counter-Strike. Young people from around the world were traveling to different events to compete. In August 2015, The International 5 DOTA 2 tournament took place, and the first place team won over $6 million dollars in prizes. One of the most organized events is the Major League Gaming (MLG).

The Events

Major League Gaming has been around for nearly a decade, and they mainly started with the rise of competitive play for Halo on the Xbox. Teams would compete in online matches to earn a spot in the different events that would take place around the United States. Each of the events would sell out with people buying tickets to be in the audience while they watched their favorite players compete. Some of the top locations for these events in the United States have included Las Vegas, Dallas, New Orleans and Anaheim. Those who can't attend the events can check them out via live streams on the MLG website.

Gaming for a Living

The average age of gamers who are in their prime range from 16 to 24. These kids are able to take their afterschool hobbies and turn them into a career in which they can make a lot of money. You may be wondering where all of this money comes from, and the teams and events are actually funded by some of the biggest brands in the world. MLGs first major sponsorship deal was from Dr. Pepper, and from there they have grown even more landing corporations like Best Buy, CenturyLink and more. Technology brands from around the world are realizing how big professional gaming is, and they're using the MLG to get their product name out there.

Becoming a Professional Gamer

The great thing about professional gaming, which is also known as eSports, is that the playing field is equal for every person. In professional sports, there's a lot of skill involved, but you typically have to be a specific height or weight to have a chance of making it. In eSports, it doesn't matter whether you're a boy or girl, short or tall or physically fit. All you have to do is practice the competitive game of your liking, find some people you enjoy playing with online and enter some of the MLGs online leagues to practice.
