Components of a Gaming PC Explained
Gaming PCs can play games with greater speed, graphics, and precision than ordinary computers. Whether purchasing one from a store or building one from the ground up, there are some basic terms that any would-be gamer should be familiar with. Here are five of the basic components and what they do:
Central Processing Unit
This could be called the brains of the computer, as it handles most of the processing tasks. The speed of a CPU is measured in GHz, and 1 GHz represents one billion operations being performed per second. Currently, most gaming computers clock in around the 4 GHz mark. A powerful CPU is the the base of any gaming system.
Graphics Processing Unit
The graphics processing unit, or GPU, is the component that handles a lot of the video tasks. It is used to render precise detail and minimize the blurring in games that involve a lot of fast motion. The fastest GPUs available today run either GDDR5 or high bandwidth memory, which are memory types specially tailored to graphics. The speed of graphics cards is also measured in Ghz, with the most powerful cards today running at least 1 GHz.
Random Access Memory
RAM is the memory that a computer uses to hold data that is accessed by the processor. The data is temporary and can change depending on what the computer is doing. Permanently stored information is kept on the hard drive, but when the processor has to access this information, it takes longer. Having a lot of memory will make a computer run much faster. RAM is measured in MHz, with the higher numbers being faster. The latest RAM type, DDR4 is faster than the previous format, DDR3
If the processor is the brain of a computer, than the mother board is the nervous system. It connects all the various components and routes signals and data between them. These do not have a simple measurement to determine whether they are gaming ready, but paying attention to the number of ports will show how many components the mother board will support.
Computers can get very hot due to the high amounts of electricity running through them. Proper cooling is a must. When choosing a computer fan look for the CFM rating. This tells how many cubic feet of air is moved per minute; the higher the number, the better the fan.
